Luna Chair
Luna is a lounge chair made from solid English ash. Taking inspiration from the long and varied histories of humanities fascination with our nearest celestial body, the Moon. From folk tales expressing its heavenly power to the stories of the Apollo missions which brought it within tangible reach of humanity.
Whether based on facts or fictions, these narratives seek to explain and describe the connections between the earth and moon through the human sphere. With Luna I wanted to draw on these interconnected narratives to create an object that sits between the mythic and scientific and offers a space for reflection on these connections.
The frame itself takes reference from the Apollo lunar lander whilst the tapered mortice and tenon joinery used to construct it was chosen as reference to the joinery used in traditional welsh stick and Windsor chairs. Such chairs were traditionally produced by bodgers; woodsmen much like the central character in the many variations of the folk tale of the man on the moon. The hand shaped seat and back as well as small crater details offer a tactile sense of the lunar surface accentuated by the strata-like grain of the Olive Ash, grown, milled and seasoned on the Norbury Estate in Staffordshire.
Luna seeks to combine these references offering a connection with these ideas of the moon and celebrate its enduring influence on humanity across cultures.
