Knott Drawers

The Knott drawers take the natural qualities of the timber as a starting point for the design, allowing the grain of the cherry boards to take centre stage. The central drawer pull protrudes forward from a dished hollow around which the grain of the drawer fronts flow. This feature is echoed back panel at the rear of the cabinet which is veneered using book-matched leaves sawn from the drawer fronts giving a sense of depth running through the piece, echoing the ghost of a branch which may have grown from this ripple in the grain.

The leg frame and carcass feature deep bevels that cut through the grain allowing the changing character of the timber come to the fore whilst also creating a light structure whose facets present themselves to you as you move around it.

The design of the Knott drawers was inspired by an example of the Model 384 cabinet designed by Kai Kristiansen. One example of this design had been elevated by the hand of the unknown craftsman who made it at Aksel Kjersgaard’s workshop who’s selection and layout of the book-matched veneers on the drawer fronts centered the flow of the grain around a circular handle feature.

As such I wanted this piece to be a celebration of craftsmanship with hand cut and fitted dovetail joinery and piston fit drawers the piece combines contemporary design with traditional cabinetry technique.
